Santiago Casilla earns seventh save Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/23/14) Giants closer Santiago Casilla locked up his seventh save Wednesday, giving up one earned run on two hits in his team's 3-1 win over the Phillies.

Casilla surrendered a one-out double before giving up an RBI single with two outs, but he retired the following batter to finish off the win. He has successfully converted all seven of his save opportunities in July. Casilla owns a 1.16 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 28:11 K:BB ratio in 38 2/3 innings.

Santiago Casilla slams door shut on Phillies
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(7/21/14) Giants closer Santiago Casilla worked his way past a hit and needed only 16 innings to secure a scoreless frame to close out 7-4 win over Philadelphia. Casilla has converted six of nine save chances, with a 0.98 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 27:10 K:BB ratio in 36 2/3 innings.
Santiago Casilla picks up one-out save Saturday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/19/14) Giants closer Santiago Casilla gave up one hit but retired the second batter he faced Saturday to pick up his fifth save in his team's 5-3 win over the Marlins.

Casilla was summoned to get the final out Saturday up three runs with a man on second, and though the run scored on a single after a wild pitch, he finished off the win to entrench himself further in the closer role. Casilla owns a 1.01 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 27:10 K:BB ratio in 35 2/3 innings.

Santiago Casilla earns fourth save Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/10/14) Giants closer Santiago Casilla secured his fourth save Wednesday, striking out one in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off his team's 5-2 win over the A's.

Casilla has given up one walk and no hits in three appearances since taking over the closer role, striking out four during that stretch. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 10 2/3 innings. Casilla owns a 1.05 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 25:10 K:BB ratio in 34 1/3 innings.

Assessing Santiago Casilla's job security
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/7/14) So Bruce Bochy named Santiago Casilla the Giants closer Monday, and no doubt, Fantasy owners thank him for it. As far as they're concerned, the only thing worse than an unreliable closer is an uncertain one.

But of course, not all closers are created equal, and while Casilla has experience in the role, having recorded 25 saves in 2012, and has thrived with a 1.08 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 29 appearances this season, I don't know that you can assume he inherits all of Sergio Romo's former value.

For one thing, Romo is still in the picture, and even with his poor numbers this season, he still has a more impressive track record than Casilla. Since the start of 2010, which is the same year Casilla came over to the Giants and became the pitcher he is today, Romo has a 2.46 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings compared to Casilla's 2.06, 1.16 and 7.7. Plus, consider how quickly everything can change for a pitcher in this role. Less than a month ago, Romo had a 3.00 ERA and nobody even dreamed he'd be where he is now. If he stops serving up so many home runs with his move to middle relief, an untimely blown save for Casilla could easily prompt another change even if he proves to be mostly effective in the role.

Because he lacks strikeout ability, I'd say Casilla's best-case scenario is somewhere in the Mark Melancon range, which isn't bad. That's top-15 potential. If that's the best-case scenario, though, and the worst is him forfeiting the job back to Romo, I'm keeping him behind Zach Britton and Cody Allen in my rankings. I'd say he has more job security than Joe Smith and certainly more than Hector Rondon or Jenrry Mejia, but I'll stay cautious with him for now.
