Preseason Outlook

Howell shut down for the season: Rays manager Joe Maddon said closer J.P. Howell has been shut down for the rest of the season. "The last few years, he's thrown more relief innings than any pitcher in baseball and there's nothing positive to be derived from having him pitch for the last 10 games, so we decided to shut him down," Maddon said.

Fantasy Analysis

The Rays didn't say who would close in Howell's place, but would you really want to take a chance on a newcomer this late in the season? Most likely, they'll turn to a committe, perhaps one led by Dan Wheeler and Randy Choate. You shouldn't bother with either of them outside of AL-only leagues, though. As for Howell, he pitched well enough to close for the Rays next season. If he does, he'll be a No. 2 Fantasy RP for an expected contender.
