Preseason Outlook

For some reason, nobody ever wanted to give Jones a look in the majors. He hung around the minors for over 10 years, hitting homers and driving in runs, with his only taste of the big leagues a 77 at-bat stint for Minnesota in 2007. Only when he went to an organization as needy as the Pirates, and only after they had traded away Nate McLouth and Adam LaRoche, did he get his opportunity to shine. And boy, did he shine. The 28-year-old rookie hit .293 with 21 homers and a .938 OPS in 314 at-bats, making the Braves and Twins look foolish for giving up on him, and he never hit a snag at any point during that second half of the season. Jones comes with an understandable amount of uncertainty considering he never performed in the minors quite like he did for the Pirates last year, but he has a slugger's body and a respectable walk rate. A batting average in the .260 range seems more likely for him during his first full season, which would still make him a potential bargain in the middle rounds. (Updated 12/9/09)
