Preseason Outlook

Ruiz set career highs in several categories last year, including home runs and OPS. Unfortunately, those career highs were only nine and .780. He's a modest offensive contributor and always will be, but his low strikeout rate keeps him from being a complete non-factor in Head-to-Head leagues. Maybe if he could get more than 400 at-bats for a change, he might actually get a look or two off the waiver wire, but between injuries -- he missed some time at the beginning of last season with a strained oblique and some time at the end with a sprained wrist -- and flavor-of-the-week backups like Chris Coste and Paul Bako, he always falls short. He can be useful in stretches, but he's pretty much just an NL-only option. (Updated 1/6/10)
