Baker walked in his first plate appearance of the game, and came around to score the winning run as the Cubs rallied to bring him around.
Baker has been mostly limited to part-time duty this season, and is hitting just .216/.308/.256 in 125 at-bats, with eight runs scored.
Cubs will continue to find starts for John Baker
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(7/6/14) Cubs catcher John Baker caught 16 of 17 starts made by Jason Hammel before Hammel was dealt to the Athletics Saturday. Though most of Baker's starts came with Hammel on the mound, manager Rick Renteria said he still plans to find starts for the veteran catcher moving forward.
"It's where we believe that the combination of both [Welington Castillo] and [Baker] fit," Renteria said, per MLB.com. "We obviously want both of them to be able to receive. We want [Castillo] to be in there. And with [Castillo] coming off of that DL stint, he's been playing pretty consistently. So we're trying to get him into shape. He's another guy who likes playing every single day, just as all those guys do. So we'll just work it through and see how it continues to develop."
