John Baker scored winning run after pitching
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(7/30/14) Cubs catcher John Baker appeared in just one inning Tuesday against the Rockies, but played a big part in the 4-3 extra-inning win.

Baker entered the game in the top of the 16th inning as a pitcher, the first time he has ever pitched as a professional. He got through the inning on 11 pitches, while walking one batter and allowing no runs, and then came to bat in the bottom half of the inning.

Baker walked in his first plate appearance of the game, and came around to score the winning run as the Cubs rallied to bring him around.

Baker has been mostly limited to part-time duty this season, and is hitting just .216/.308/.256 in 125 at-bats, with eight runs scored.

Cubs will continue to find starts for John Baker
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/6/14) Cubs catcher John Baker caught 16 of 17 starts made by Jason Hammel before Hammel was dealt to the Athletics Saturday. Though most of Baker's starts came with Hammel on the mound, manager Rick Renteria said he still plans to find starts for the veteran catcher moving forward.

"It's where we believe that the combination of both [Welington Castillo] and [Baker] fit," Renteria said, per MLB.com. "We obviously want both of them to be able to receive. We want [Castillo] to be in there. And with [Castillo] coming off of that DL stint, he's been playing pretty consistently. So we're trying to get him into shape. He's another guy who likes playing every single day, just as all those guys do. So we'll just work it through and see how it continues to develop."

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(6/28/14) Cubs catcher John Baker drove in four runs Friday against the Nationals.

Baker was perfect at the plate, going 3 for 3, and reaching in all four of his plate appearances. He singled in his first two at-bats, walked his third time up and then hit a bases-clearing double in his final at-bat. Baker scored one run and drove in four. He's hitting .186/.252/.216 over 97 at-bats.
