| Pirates' Penn sold to Japanese team |
| (7/20/10) From The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Hayden Penn's rights were sold to the Japanese club Chiba Lotte for an undisclosed amount of cash, GM Neal Huntington confirmed. Penn, a 25-year-old right-hander, was 4-4 with a 4.68 ERA in 12 starts for Triple-A Indianapolis, including a 1.89 ERA in six June starts that earned him the team's player-of-the-month award. |
| Pirates to ship Penn to Japan |
| (7/18/10) The Pittsburgh Pirates are working on a deal that would send Triple-A RP Hayden Penn to the Chiba Lotte Marines club in Japan. General manager Neal Huntington told MLB.com, that the deal isn't official yet as they need to finalize some details. "The money was such that he felt it was important for him to be allowed this opportunity," Huntington said. "Part of us wanted to say, 'No.' But as we look forward to the 2011 club, while there were some things that we were really intrigued by, it was tough to stand in this young man's way. He felt like this was a tremendous opportunity for him." In 12 starts for Triple-A Indianapolis this year, Penn is 4-4 with a 4.68 ERA in 12 starts. He's struck out 56 in his 65 1/3 innings of work. The report stated that if Penn didn't make the team out of spring training in 2011, they could lose him anyway. |

| (5/12/10) From The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Hayden Penn was assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis from extended spring training and started against Rochester, getting a no-decision as he allowed three runs in six innings. Penn began the season with the Pirates as a reliever before being designated for assignment April 12 after going 0-0 with a 30.86 ERA in three games. Once he cleared waivers, Penn reported to the Pirates' training facility in Bradenton, Fla., in order to build up enough arm strength to take a regular turn in the rotation. |

Penn was outrighted to Indianapolis after being designated for assignment last week. He pitched just 2 1/3 innings in three relief appearances for the Pirates, posting a 30.86 ERA. |
