Preseason Outlook

The Royals thought they had found their answer at shortstop with Mike Aviles. They thought wrong. Aviles' struggles and eventual need for Tommy John surgery created an opening that Willie Bloomquist and Tony Pena couldn't fill, prompting the acquisition of Betancourt just before the All-Star break. Betancourt never lived up to expectations in Seattle, his batting average falling for a second straight year even though he reached the magical age of 27. He doesn't walk. He doesn't homer. He doesn't steal bases. With as little progress as he has made in five major league seasons, you can throw upside out the window. The Royals will either start him because they like his glove or sit him because they prefer Aviles' bat. If the former, Betancourt has some value in AL-only leagues just because he gets everyday at-bats, but you shouldn't aim for him on Draft Day. (Updated 1/5/10)
