Preseason Outlook

Duke is one of the control-and-command Pirates lefties who seem to alternative between impressive and underwhelming. Most of 2009 was the former for the 26-year-old potential staff ace. Duke approached a career high in innings, but he wore down after the break, posting a 3-8 record, 5.17 ERA and a .318 batting-average against in the second half. It was a contrast to his impressive first half, when he was 8-8 with a 3.29 ERA and .260 BAA. We tend to believe Duke can be a lot closer to his pre-break version, which makes him a sleeper in NL-only leagues. Heck, he might even be worth taking a flier on late in mixed leagues, although pitching for the lowly Pirates presents plenty of challenges. (Updated 1/13/10)
