White Sox's Petricka nets first save with Robertson unavailable
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(5/28/15) With White Sox manager Robin Ventura looking to stay away from closer David Robertson on Thursday, he turned to Zach Duke and Jake Petricka to close out a 3-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader against the Orioles.
Ventura kept Duke in the game in the ninth inning after he relieved Chris Sale with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Duke struck out Manny Machado in the eighth to preserve a 2-0 lead. He took the mound in the ninth with a 3-0 lead.
He struck out the first two batters in the ninth before running into trouble. Delmon Young had a two-out single, and then Chris Davis parked a two-run homer into the right-field seats to cut the deficit to one.
Ventura went to Petricka for the final out of the game. He struck out Travis Snider for his first save of the season and 15th career save.
White Sox RP Zach Duke adds arm angle
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(2/27/15) White Sox reliever Zach Duke said Friday that he's added an arm angle rather than adjust his normal angle, MLB.com reports.
"I didn't adjust my arm angle. I added a second one," Duke said. "So, I throw from multiple angles. That's really what it is. I still throw from my normal angle. I just added a second one."
Duke used the new arm angle prominently during Friday's bullpen session.
"It's kind of a sidearm one that I incorporated, and I've got fastballs and breaking balls from both," Duke said. "The hitter doesn't really know which one I'm going to throw from at any time. It really helps me just as far as reactions from the hitter are concerned. They don't know where the ball is going to come from."
"There's not a lot [of pitchers] that can sit there and change arm angles and be effective and hit spots like he can," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura. "It's definitely an added bonus when you can get a guy to do that without hurting himself."
Duke made 74 relief appearances with the Brewers in 2014, going 5-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 74:17 K:BB ratio in 58 2/3 innings.
White Sox sign reliever Zach Duke to three-year, $15 million deal
|by Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer|
|(11/18/14) The White Sox announced Tuesday they signed reliever Zach Duke to a three-year, $15 million contract.
The former starting pitcher went 5-1 with a 2.45 ERA, 12 holds and 74 strikeouts in a career-high 74 appearances (58 2/3 innings) with the Brewers in 2014.
"Very early on, we identified Zach as one of the best left-handed free agents available this offseason, so we are very pleased he agreed to join the White Sox," White Sox senior vice president/general manager Rick Hahn said. "He addresses an important need in our bullpen by giving Robin Ventura a veteran left-handed option late in games."
Zach Duke takes first loss Wednesday
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(8/28/14) Brewers pitcher Zach Duke was stuck with his first loss Wednesday, giving up one earned run on two hits and one walk while recording two outs in his team's 3-2, 10th-inning defeat against the Padres.
Duke (4-1) put the first two batters of the bottom of the 10th inning on base but looked like he may escape with the game still tied after retiring the next two batters. It didn't happen, as a single brought home the game-ending run. Duke, who has put together a rocky August, owns a 2.47 ERA and 63:15 K:BB ratio in 51 innings.
