| Mariners going with tandem at shortstop |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (4/28/13) Mariners manager Eric Wedge wanted to make it clear that he did not bench shortstop Brendan Ryan, the Tacoma News Tribune reports.
"Regardless of what has been written, I didn’t bench (Ryan)," Wedge said. "I said Andino is going to play more and we’re going to take it day to day, week to week and month to month and see what happens."
Ryan has started the last two games after Robert Andino saw two starts at short. It looks like they'll be rotated as the position continues to be evaluated. Ryan is batting .148 over 61 at-bats with three RBI and 15 strikeouts. Andino has seen 40 at-bats and is hitting .200 with two RBI and 14 Ks.

| Mariners manager breaks down shortstop plan |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (4/24/13) Mariners manager Eric Wedge announced Wednesday he's swapping shortstops, replacing Brendan Ryan in the starting lineup with Robert Andino.
"I’m going to take it day-by-day, week-by-week and month-by-month, quite frankly," Wedge said, per MLB.com. "I’m going to give Robert a chance to play and see where he takes it. I like what I saw with his work and his approach this spring. I don’t feel it’s been as good in-season, but it’s been a little better here the last week in the cage. It’s an opportunity for Andino to go out and take it."
Wedge said he's open to Ryan reclaiming the starting job, but he's needs to show a permanent improvement in his hitting approach. Ryan is batting .143 in 2013 and is a career .241 hitter.
"We stuck with him last year because we felt we’d give him every opportunity," Wedge said. "And quite frankly, we had an opportunity to give him every opportunity, if that makes any sense. But you can’t expect change by doing the same thing every day. You have to change your habits and the way you go about doing things. It’s as simple as that. We’re going to give him a chance to work with [hitting coach] Dave Hansen and take a step back, hopefully to take two steps forward. It’s up to him."

Down on the Farm: False hope on the bench
At what point is a bench spot going to waste on a top prospect with no clear path to the majors? Our Scott White runs through six names that are quickly becoming a waste of time in seasonal formats.

| The Orioles didn't intend to make Robert Andino an everyday player in 2012, but with Brian Roberts again confined to the DL for virtually the entire season, that's what he became. Of course, starting at second base didn't make him a starting second baseman. Instead, it just made him a liability. After experimenting with other options at the position late last season, the Orioles decided to remove Andino from the equation this offseason, shipping him to the Mariners for Trayvon Robinson. In Seattle, Andino will compete for the starting shortstop job with another light-hitting, sure-handed middle infielder in Brendan Ryan, but you shouldn't necessarily be rooting for him to win it. Now that he's in a lesser lineup and a worse hitting environment, Andino is clearly just a last resort in Fantasy. (Updated 1/9/13) |
