Yusmeiro Petit good, but not good enough Sunday
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(9/14/14) Giants starter Yusmeiro Petit pitched well Sunday against the Dodgers - but that's rarely good enough to beat Clayton Kershaw.
Petit allowed three earned runs on eight hits in seven innings with no walks and eight strikeouts. He was doomed by a two-run homer off the bat of Matt Kemp in the sixth. Petit has surrendered just four runs in his last 16 innings pitched.
He will try to remain on a roll Saturday in San Diego.
Yusmeiro Petit strikes out nine in complete-game win Tuesday
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(9/10/14) Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit spun a complete-game victory Tuesday, giving up just one earned run on four hits in nine innings and striking out nine in his team's 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks.
Petit (5-3) served up a solo home run in the fourth inning but was brilliant otherwise. He needed just 84 pitches to record 27 outs in the win. Petit owns a 3.62 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 110:18 K:BB ratio in 99 1/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Dodgers Sunday.
|2014 Summary: Yusmeiro Petit may be a soft-tosser, but a deceptive curveball baffled opponents and helped him to rack up 133 strikeouts in 117 innings. He was so dominant in the Giants' bullpen, he got a second chance to work in the rotation, even though he was blasted for a 5.81 ERA in five early-season starts. The second time around, Petit registered a 3.93 ERA over six starts, and six of the 16 total earned runs he allowed came in a single start at Coors Field.|
Playing time status: Petit has pitched well enough as a starter to deserve a permanent role in the rotation, but he's also been so valuable as a reliever that he could return to that role.
2015 Outlook: Watch how Petit's role develops closely over the offseason and in spring training, because as a starter, he has value for standard mixed league owners. Because of a high flyball rate, Petit will be a streaming option in those formats, but with AT&T Park as his home, he'll be worth starting more often than not. That will make the 30-year-old worth a late-round flier, especially in leagues where he can be used in a relief spot.
