Bochy: Lincecum will be fifth starter; Vogelsong, Petit to bullpen
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(2/18/15) Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Tim Lincecum will be the team's fifth starter. He added Ryan Vogelsong and Yusmeiro Petit will pitch out of the bullpen, but could make an occasional start to give a starting pitcher a break.
Lincecum went 12-9 with a 4.74 ERA in 33 appearances (26 starts) in 2014. He was 2-0 with a 5.73 ERA and one save in seven relief appearances.
Lincecum said he spent the offseason working with his father fine tuning his mechanics. He said he had about 50 throwing sessions with his father this winter.
“I feel more confidence in myself. I feel I deserve the reward you can find from doing the right kind of work," Lincecum said, per the San Francisco Chronicle.

|(1/16/15) The Giants have avoided arbitration with reliever Yusmeiro Petit, reports CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman on Friday. Both sides have agreed to a $2.1 million for 2015.
Petit went 5-5 with a 3.69 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP and 133:22 K:BB ratio over 117 innings.
Giants RP Yusmeiro Petit earns Game 4 NLCS win
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(10/16/14) Giants reliever Yusmeiro Petit picked up the win in Game 4 of the NLCS Wednesday, allowing just one hit and one walk in three scoreless innings while striking out four in his team's 6-4 victory over the Cardinals.
Petit (2-0) won his first postseason appearance in the previous round, stringing together six scoreless innings in his team's 18-inning win over the Nationals. He was just as impressive in a shorter outing Wednesday, cleaning up after starter Ryan Vogelsong lasted just three innings. The Giants head into Wednesday's Game 5 with a 3-1 lead and three chances to advance to the World Series.
Yusmeiro Petit fans eight in no-decision
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(9/26/14) Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit struck out eight in a no-decision in his final start of the regular season Thursday night at home against the Padres. He allowed three runs on five hits and one walk over 5 1/3 innings of work. The Padres scored five runs in the seventh inning to knock him out of the decision.
Petit finishes the regular season 5-5 with a 3.69 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP and 133:22 K:BB ratio over 117 innings.
|2014 Summary: Yusmeiro Petit may be a soft-tosser, but a deceptive curveball baffled opponents and helped him to rack up 133 strikeouts in 117 innings. He was so dominant in the Giants' bullpen, he got a second chance to work in the rotation, even though he was blasted for a 5.81 ERA in five early-season starts. The second time around, Petit registered a 3.93 ERA over six starts, and six of the 16 total earned runs he allowed came in a single start at Coors Field.|
Playing time status: Petit has pitched well enough as a starter to deserve a permanent role in the rotation, but he's also been so valuable as a reliever that he could return to that role.
2015 Outlook: Watch how Petit's role develops closely over the offseason and in spring training, because as a starter, he has value for standard mixed league owners. Because of a high flyball rate, Petit will be a streaming option in those formats, but with AT&T Park as his home, he'll be worth starting more often than not. That will make the 30-year-old worth a late-round flier, especially in leagues where he can be used in a relief spot.
