(5/14/13) Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar collected three hits Monday against the Angels.
Escobar hit two singles and added a double later in the game. Escobar also stole a base, bringing his total to eight this year. He's hitting .267/.299/.377 in 146 at-bats.

(5/5/13) Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar continued his recent hot hitting ways Sunday against the White Sox. He went 2 for 5 with an RBI in the 6-5 win.
The 26-year-old singled home a run in the fifth inning before collecting another base hit in the seventh.
Escobar has seen his average rise from .226 to .295 over the last 14 contests. He is batting .356 (21 for 59) with two homers, five RBI and four stolen bases during that stretch.

(4/30/13) While Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar currently ranks fourth among shortstops in Points leagues (78 total points) this season, there is a bit of a dark cloud hanging over the horizon: Escobar's performance takes a marked dip in the month of May.
In 278 career at-bats (over 80 games), Escobar has career lows in average (.259), OPS (.640), home runs (1), triples (2), RBI (18), and -- most importantly -- steals (5, with the next-lowest being 11, in July). Escobar actually had a decent May last year, with a .310 average, but stole the fewest bases (3) of any month.
This is by no means a reason to cut Escobar, just a warning that he may hit a dip for the next 31 days, if his past stats are any indication. His owners should enjoy this last day of April before a possible downward slide in May.

(4/28/13) Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar had a productive day in Sunday's doubleheader against the Indians. He went 1 for 5 with a home run in Game 1 before adding a couple more hits in the nightcap. Escobar finished a combined 3 for 8 with two RBI, two runs scored and a walk.
The 26-year-old launched a two-run shot off starter Justin Masterson for his third long ball of the year.
Escobar has hit in nine straight contests and has gone 15 for 36 (.417) with four RBI and six runs scored during that stretch.

(4/25/13) Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar extended his hitting streak to six games Thursday at Detroit, with a 2-for-5 performance. It was the fifth time during the hitting streak Escobar managed two hits.
Escobar is batting .440 (11 for 25) with one home run, one double, two RBI and four runs during the streak. Escobar's average has soared from .226 to .295 in his last six games.

Alcides Escobar gets three hits

| After bringing almost nothing to the table offensively in his first two big-league seasons, Alcides Escobar finally made an impact in Fantasy last year. The key for him was tapping into his speed. Though he still didn't offer much pop or on-base ability, his 35 stolen bases kept him high enough in both the Rotisserie and Head-to-Head rankings that he was pretty much universally owned by season's end. Of course, a career-high .293 batting average no doubt contributed to those stolen bases, and seeing as it was powered by a relatively high BABIP, it's no certainty to last. Still, you can't discount the possibility of a natural progression here. Escobar just turned 26 in the offseason. He's beginning the prime of his career. He's stronger now than when he began, and even if it doesn't translate to more homers, it still probably makes him a better hitter. Any non-power hitter who walks as little as he does has a razor-thin margin for error, though. With Ben Zobrist gaining eligibility at the position and Ian Desmond emerging last year, shortstop has become deep enough that you shouldn't have to reach for Escobar on Draft Day. But if you have a hole to fill at the position and a need for steals in the middle-to-late rounds, he's probably your guy. (Updated 12/7/12) |
