|Good-glove, no-hit Alcides Escobar seeking to shed that tag |
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
(2/20/14) Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar was a Gold Glove finalist in 2013, but he was also among the worst hitters among all every-day players in the sport.
"Sometimes it looks like he doesn't want to be at the plate," a scout told the Kansas City Star.
That will have to change this season, as will his production. Escobar batted just .234 and managed a mere 19 walks and four home runs in 607 at-bats, leading to an on-base percentage of .259 and slugging percentage of .300.
"When they know they're struggling a little bit, they get in a hurry to get caught up," said Ned Yost. "And that tends to have guys swing earlier in the count. And that's what (Escobar) did."
Escobar has vowed to become more patient at the plate.

|Alcides Escobar hits fourth home run |
|by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com|
(9/11/13) Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar hit his fourth home run in Tuesday's win over Cleveland.
Escobar finished 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBI. The home run was his first since April 28. Escobar is hitting a meager .235/.260/.303 on the season.
|The Royals have been waiting for Alcides Escobar to blossom offensively. In 2012, Escobar started to showcase some of his burgeoning offensive skills, but he sadly went through a pretty bad regression in 2013, leaving doubt about his ability to become an all-around player. After batting .293 with a .331 on-base percentage, .390 slugging percentage and .721 OPS in 2012, Escobar hit just .234 with a .259 on-base percentage, .300 slugging percentage and .559 OPS in 158 games last season. The defense-savvy shortstop did tie a career high with 52 RBI, as well as total at least 20 doubles and 20 stolen bases for a third straight season. Still, there were few offensive highlights for the 27-year-old shortstop. He got off to a pretty promising start, batting .286 with a .439 slugging percentage, .769 OPS, three home runs, six doubles, 12 RBI and six stolen bases in 24 April games, but it was pretty much downhill the rest of the way. He doesn't have a lot of offensive upside, so Escobar is a deep-league option on Draft Day.
