Preseason Outlook

Pedroia couldn't measure up to his MVP 2008 season last year, but then again, did anyone expect him to? Surprisingly, he fell short with his batting average, his .296 mark putting him under .300 for the first time in his career. He had nearly identical power and speed numbers, hitting 15 homers and stealing 20 bases. A 20-20 season is a stretch for the diminutive second baseman, but not outside the realm of possibility, especially since he's only 26. If you draft him, though, you draft him for only marginal help in those categories, banking more on a high batting average and plenty of runs scored. He led the league in the latter for a second straight season last year, which is no surprise considering how often he gets on base, and let's not overlook the fact he struck out only 45 times in 626 at-bats. He doesn't have the upside of an Ian Kinsler, Aaron Hill or Robinson Cano, but he comes with some guarantees they don't. Expect him to go off the board in the first four or five rounds on Draft Day.
