(1/28/14) Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has been pleased with his progress coming off mid-November thumb surgery.
"I feel great," Pedroia told WEEI. "I’ve been probably doing a little bit more than I’m supposed to do, but I feel great, man. I haven’t had a setback one time. Gripping stuff is not a problem, swinging a bat is not a problem, catching a ball is not a problem. So I’m excited, man, this is good."
Pedroia also talked about the limitations he had last season while dealing with the thumb injury.
"To be honest with you, it was just an uncomfortable feeling," he said. "I didn’t have that much grip strength. I was fine at the contact point and then the only tough part was kind of finishing your swing because [you] have to turn your follow through turn your left hand over and your thumb kind of rotates. That was one of the things that was a problem all year. … Even from the beginning, you have to figure out a way to get through it kind of and adjust on the fly, but I didn’t feel any different the first game or second game to the last game of the World Series. Obviously you get tired because you play so many games."

(11/13/13) According to the Boston Globe, Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia had surgery on his left thumb Wednesday. Though there had been concerns that he may have required a complicated procedure, Pedroia had a more straightforward procedure with a shorter recovery time.
Pedroia is expected to be ready for the beginning of spring training.
|Dustin Pedroia hit .301 with nine home runs and 42 doubles in 2013. And while the dip in home runs (his lowest total since his 2007 rookie campaign) may be concerning, keep in mind Pedroia essentially played all of the season with a torn ligament in his thumb; he was injured diving into first base on opening day. He somehow managed to play 160 games, and it's safe to assume that a torn UCL in a player's thumb could have an adverse effect on power numbers. The surgery was performed in mid-November, and there is some talk of Pedroia being eased into spring training. But whatever rust he may have to shake off will likely be countered by Pedroia having a full season with a healthy thumb. His power should get back up to at least 15-homer territory, he's a career .302 hitter, and Pedroia is usually good for about 20 steals. At a shallow Fantasy position, Pedroia should be off the board by the end of the second round.
