Latest News
After showing steady improvement over his first three years in the majors, Markakis took a big step back in 2009, barely outperforming his rookie season with an .801 OPS. He still drove in 100 runs and hit a respectable .293, but he lost a few homers and stopped walking so much, possibly as a side effect of Aubrey Huff's collapse. By now, Markakis has established himself as a reliable hitter with above-average pop, but as he enters his age-26 season, you have to wonder when he'll take that next step forward and become a perennial All-Star. His batting average, runs scored and RBI still give him plenty of Fantasy value even if he typically comes up short in home runs and stolen bases, but by now, you should know not to expect any huge breakthroughs, even if they remain possible. His pedigree suggests he could outperform his draft position, but if you draft him as your No. 1 outfielder, you enter the season at a disadvantage. Target him more as a high-end No. 2.
