Preseason Outlook

You can't argue Cabrera showed progress last year. He hit a career-high 13 homers and equaled a career high with a .752 OPS, matching the mark set during his promising rookie season. But he still has a long way to go before he becomes a worthwhile Fantasy option. The Braves obviously saw something they liked in him, acquiring him as the centerpiece, at least at the major-league level, of a package for ace Javier Vazquez. In Atlanta, Cabrera will probably get more consistent at-bats than he did in New York, where he had to split time with Brett Gardner, but then again, if top prospect Jason Heyward wins a job out of spring training, Cabrera could find himself in a platoon with Matt Diaz. Even though he's only 25, a 20-homer season seems unlikely for Cabrera based on the little progress he has made so far. He has a good contact rate, but his sparse totals make him more of a waiver claim than a player to target on Draft Day. (Updated 1/19/10)
