Preseason Outlook

After impressing as a part-timer and knocking the ball around in spring training, Spilborghs looked like he might take off as a first-time starter in 2009. Instead, he fell into an early slump and got a quick hook, becoming the platoon partner for younger (and more talented) left-handed hitters Carlos Gonzalez and Seth Smith. With a career-high 352 at-bats, his batting average (.241) and slugging percentage (.395) were by far his lowest of his career, indicating he isn't the same player with increased exposure. His ratios should look better with his at-bats limited again, which makes him worth a look in NL-only leagues, but he isn't going to hit a bunch of homers or steal a bunch of bases.
