| Elliot Johnson sends average soaring |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/16/13) Royals infielder Elliot Johnson had two hits Wednesday against the Angels for his fourth multi-hit game since April 30. Johnson is batting .423 (11 for 26) in his last 10 games (eight starts), raising his average from .118 to .302.
But Johnson has just a double, home run and an RBI in that 10-game stretch.

| Royals riding red-hot Elliot Johnson |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (5/11/13) For the fourth time in the past five games, Royals infielder Elliot Johnson earned the start at second base as the team continues to ride his hot streak. Johnson had his modest four-game hitting streak halted Friday but is hitting a solid .357 during the month of May, prompting additional playing time while Chris Getz has sputtered.
"He's swinging the bat well and playing exceptional defense. He's made some nice plays up the middle," manager Ned Yost told the Kansas City Star. "But when (Chris Getz) gets hot, we'll ride him. Our record with Getz in the lineup is well above .500 for the last two years. He does a lot of things, too. It's just that we're riding Elliot because he's swinging the bat well now."

| Elliot Johnson accepts utility role |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/2/13) Royals infielder Elliot Johnson started a second straight game Wednesday against the Rays in part because of his play Tuesday and starting second baseman Chris Getz was dealing with allergy-related issues, per The Kansas City Star. While Johnson had another strong game Wednesday -- hitting a home run against his former team -- he understands his role is as a bench player.
"My role is pretty well understood and I accept my role," Johnson said. "I’m here to be the utility guy. If they need me out there, I take the opportunity. If not, my job is to be ready for whenever (manager) Ned (Yost) calls my name."

| Elliot Johnson provides power vs. former teammates |
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com (5/2/13) Royals infielder Elliot Johnson has struggled to get going, but facing his former team seemed to provide him with a spark Wednesday. Johnson hit his first home run of the season Wednesday in a 9-8 win over the Rays. He went 1 for 4 in the game.
Johnson is batting .208 with one extra-base hit and two RBI in 24 at-bats.

| Elliot Johnson a utility line for Royals |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (4/2/13) One of the traits Royals manager Ned Yost seeks in a player is his versatility at several positions.
After arriving in a trade from the Rays during the offseason, Elliot Johnson seems like a natural fit for that billing, as he is capable of filling any spot in the infield and has range to patrol the outfield.
"He's extremely versatile. Depending on situations, I can put him anywhere in the field and feel good about it," Yost told MLB.com. "Switch-hitter, puts the ball in the play. He can do a lot of things. He was a very impressive player for me. He probably impressed me more than anybody we had in camp with his abilities."

| Elliot Johnson offered a nice combination of stolen bases and moderate power as a minor leaguer, but for years, he had just fallen short of making the Rays' roster. After playing 70 games for Tampa Bay in 2011, Johnson played an important role in 2012, appearing in 123 games, including a team-leading 68 starts at shortstop. Johnson did deliver 18 steals, but he hit only .242 with six home runs, and he had struggles defensively. With Yunel Escobar set to be the Rays' everyday shortstop, it's hard to imagine Johnson getting another chance at significant playing time, especially with Sean Rodriguez and Reid Brignac looming as alternatives off the bench. Only because of the potential for steals, Johnson is worth considering in deep AL-only leagues. (Updated 1/10/13) |
