Astros manager A.J. Hinch on naming a closer: 'It'll take a while'
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(2/21/15) Astros manager A.J. Hinch told reporters Saturday that he has somewhat of an idea who his closer will be this season, but declined to reveal any names, per the Houston Chronicle. Hinch noted that it "will take a while" before he names his closer.
"I think you got to let it play out," Hinch said. "I don't want to get too far in trying to make that happen in your own mind. But I do have an idea of how I think it's going to play out, but I'm not rushing to judgment, or, I'm not against changing my mind about half a dozen to 10 times between now and April. It's very, very premature.
"There's less need to sort of try out. Competing for it is sort of a hard way to describe it when you've got guys that have some credentials. So I'll stop calling it a competition, but it's more of an alignment of how we're going to use them."
Luke Gregerson signed a three-year, $18.5 million contract with the Astros, and is the highest-paid reliever on the roster. Chad Qualls was the ninth-inning man last season, and Pat Neshek, Tony Sipp and Josh Fields are all viable candidates for the gig.
Astros agree to deal with reliever Pat Neshek

|(12/10/14) After agreeing to a three-year, $18.5 million deal with reliever Luke Gregerson, the Astros are not done bolstering their bullpen. The Astros are now in agreement on a deal with reliever Pat Neshek, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.
The 34-year-old Neshek was a first-time All-Star in 2014 with the Cardinals. He went 7-2 with a 1.87 ERA and 0.79 WHIP in 71 relief appearances. He also had a career-best 25 holds.
Cardinals may not be able to keep Pat Neshek

|(10/17/14) Cardinals reliever Pat Neshek may have to test the open market this winter, according to MLB.com.
After his performance last season, there's a sense that Neshek has priced himself out of St. Louis' bullpen. Neshek was exceptional with the club, posting a 1.87 ERA over 67 1/3 innings. The performance earned him a trip to the All-Star Game. The team will likely attempt to re-sign Neshek, but there's a sense he can get a more lucrative deal elsewhere.
Pat Neshek takes loss vs. Cubs Tuesday
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(9/23/14) Cardinals pitcher Pat Neshek was stuck with a loss Tuesday, giving up one earned run on two hits and one walk in 1 2/3 innings while striking out three in his team's 4-3 walkoff defeat against the Cubs.
Neshek (7-2) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning but gave up a one-out double in the 10th, with the runner advancing to third base on a groundout. After an intentional walk, the reliever surrendered a single to bring home the game-ending run. Neshek owns a 1.49 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 68:9 K:BB ratio in 66 1/3 innings.
Pat Neshek picks up two-out save
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(9/13/14) Cardinals pitcher Pat Neshek was not sharp despite picking up a two-out save Saturday ngith against Colorado. He allowed one run on two hits over two-thirds of an inning. He owns a 1.46 ERA and a 0.70 WHIP over 61 2/3 innings of work.
Grading the Offseason: NL Central
The Cardinals made a big move to improve their outfield, the Cubs hired the best manager in the business, the Pirates did what they had to, and the Brewers and Reds treaded water.
2014 summary: With his arm troubles finally behind him, Pat Neshek had a season for the ages in 2014, ranking right there with Dellin Betances in terms of ERA and WHIP. He even got six saves spelling embattled closer Trevor Rosenthal from time to time.
Playing time status: Neshek could close and signed with the Astros, a team that desperately needs a closer. But Luke Gregerson, another offseason signing, figures to get the first crack at the role. Though Neshek's elbow was a problem earlier in his career, three straight healthy seasons more or less put those concerns to rest.
2015 outlook: Neshek is one of those rare relievers who matters in mixed Rotisserie leagues even if he doesn't get saves, which is good since he probably won't. He could be a Mark Melancon type waiting in the wings if Gregerson doesn't secure the role, though, so don't forget about him if he goes undrafted in your league.
