Preseason Outlook

Smith got his first extended time in the majors last year and demonstrated the same OPS potential he did in the minors. In fact, he looked like the type of player who could hit 25-30 home runs with 80-90 walks if given full-time at-bats. Unfortunately, whenever he got full-time at-bats, he fell into a slump, which might indicate an inability to handle the role or might just be a coincidence. Because the Rockies also have to find at-bats for Carlos Gonzalez and Dexter Fowler, they'll shy away from starting Smith against left-handers even though his .868 OPS against them wasn't much lower than his .894 mark against righties. If, however, the Rockies lose an outfielder to trade or injury, Smith could make a huge impact in Fantasy. Just watch out for his home-road splits. He struggled away from Coors Field last year.
