Fantasy Analysis
This is a very important spring training for Devine, who will get the chance to become the A's closer in the wake of Andrew Bailey being traded to Boston. Devine will have competition from Grant Balfour, Fautino De Los Santos and Brian Fuentes, but Devine was selected in the first round in 2005 by the Braves to potentially one day be a closer and now he gets a chance. If Devine wins the job, then he immediately becomes a player worth adding off Fantasy waivers. (Updated 01/17/2012).
06/23/2011 00:31 Mets sink Athletics with walk-off HBP in 13th
Brad Ziegler hit Justin Turner with a pitch with two outs in the 13th inning to force in the winning run and the New York Mets ended the Oakland Athletics' six-game winning streak, 3-2 Wednesday night.
Joey Devine returned to the mound last season after missing the previous two campaigns while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He made his 2011 debut in late May and posted a 3.52 ERA over 26 appearances until a back injury in late July sidelined for the remainder of the season. The right-hander heads into this season as healthy as he has been in years and is expected to compete with Grant Balfour and Fautino De Los Santos for the closer's role, with Andrew Bailey now in Boston. Keep an eye on the competition during the spring as it will determine the Fantasy value for the 28-year-old. Devine has proven to be an effective reliever -- when healthy -- and would be worth a look as a low-end Fantasy RP on Draft Day if he ends up pitching in the ninth inning for the A's. (Updated 2/1/12)
