Fantasy Analysis
Volquez is in his first season with San Diego after being a key piece in the trade that sent Mat Latos to Cincinnati. Volquez struggled after returning from Tommy John surgery and is just 9-10 with a 5.20 ERA in 32 starts since the 2010 season. Moving to PETCO Park should help, but Volquez remains just a late-round Fantasy option. (Updated 01/17/2012).

The Reds rebuilt a significant portion of their roster in the hopes of winning now. Our Al Melchior breaks down Cincinnati's Fantasy options for owners to consider on Draft Day.
Included as part of the trade Mat Latos/Yonder Alonso deal, Edinson Volquez gets a much-needed change of scenery, starting over with the Padres. His final season with the Reds was a tumultuous one, as he endured bouts of wildness and a pair of minor-league demotions. Volquez gave Fantasy owners some reasons for hope, as he returned to the Reds' rotation for four late-season starts, and he walked 10 batters in 23 2/3 innings, which signaled a modest improvement in his control. The former All-Star is adept at avoiding contact and inducing grounders, so if he can cut back on free passes this season, he could provide unexpected value for owners in mixed leagues. Still, Volquez has plenty of work to do in order to reestablish his value, so he should be drafted only in deeper mixed leagues and in NL-only formats. (Updated 1/26/12)
