Edinson Volquez surrenders five runs in wild-card loss
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(10/1/14) Pirates pitcher Edinson Volquez took a loss in Wednesday's wild-card game, giving up five earned runs on five hits and three walks in five-plus innings while striking out three in his team's 8-0 defeat against the Giants.
Volquez (0-1) did a fine job through three innings but ran into trouble quickly in the fourth, giving up back-to-back singles before a walk loaded the bases for Brandon Crawford, who smashed a grand slam over the right field wall to put the Giants ahead for good. Volquez was pulled after issuing a walk to start the sixth inning, with the runner coming around to score after the starter had departed. It's a disappointing performance after Volquez posted a 1.08 ERA in five September starts. He hadn't taken a loss since July 21.

Edinson Volquez picks up no decision after strong start
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
|(9/20/14) Pirates pitcher Edinson Volquez turned in a scoreless start Saturday against the Brewers.
Volquez allowed three hits over seven scoreless frames. He struck out six and issued three walks during the appearance. Though he was mostly unhittable during the outing, Volquez never seriously flirted with a no-hitter. He gave up a double in the first inning, but was able to get out of the frame without giving up any runs. Volquez put two runners on base during the third inning, but was otherwise able to prevent multiple base runners during the start.
Volquez left with the game tied, picking up a no-decision. He’ll take on the Braves in his next start.
Edinson Volquez keeps rolling

|(9/14/14) Pirates pitcher Edinson Volquez improved to 4-0 in his last 10 starts with Sunday's 7-3 win over the Cubs. Volquez (12-7) allowed three runs (one earned) and four hits over seven innings, striking out five and walking five.
Now sporting a 3.27 ERA, Volquez will face the Brewers at home Saturday.
|It seems like yesterday Edinson Volquez was a 17-game winner and striking out 200-plus batters. But believe it or not that was 2008, and Volquez hasn't been close to pitching like an All-Star in years. Volquez's career was derailed in 2009 when elbow pain led to Tommy John surgery. Once Volquez made it back to the majors in 2010 after serving a 50-game suspension for using performing-enhancing drugs, he just never regained his pre-surgery form. Since 2010, Volquez is 29-33 with a 4.99 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 97 games (96 starts). Volquez began 2013 with the Padres, but he was released in late August after going 9-10 with a 6.01 ERA in 27 starts. He joined the Dodgers on a minor-league contract and would make it back to the majors in late August. But the results were still paltry. Volquez went 0-2 with a 4.18 ERA in six appearances (five starts) for Los Angeles. The Pirates signed Volquez to a one-year deal in the offseason. He could open the season at the back end of the rotation, but even if that happens, leave him for deeper formats on Draft Day.
