| Edinson Volquez strikes out six in no-decision |

(6/18/13) Padres starting pitcher Edinson Volquez surrendered three earned runs over five innings in a no-decision against the Giants Monday, giving up six hits and a walk while striking out six. He threw 61 of his 89 pitches for strikes.
Volquez remains at 5-5 while his ERA and WHIP drop to 5.84 and 1.60, respectively. He'll face the Dodgers at home Saturday.

(6/12/13) Padres starting pitcher Edinson Volquez struck out a season-high nine batters Wednesday, allowing just one earned run on six hits and three walks in seven innings to pick up a win against the Braves.
Volquez was coming off his worst start of the season (2 1/3 innings, nine runs in Colorado). He threw 106 pitches before the bullpen needed five guys to record the final six outs and deliver Volquez his fifth win. He takes a 5.87 ERA into a start in San Francisco against the Giants Tuesday.

(6/7/13) Padres starter Edinson Volquez endured his worst performance of the season but escaped with a no-decision Friday against the Rockies at Coors Field.
Volquez was shelled for nine runs on 11 hits and two walks while striking out one in 2 1/3 innings. He threw 63 pitches, 37 for strikes.
Volquez has allowed four runs or more in four of his last five starts. His ERA rose from 5.36 to 6.33 after Friday's meltdown. He is expected to make his next start Wednesday at home against the Braves. He is 2-3 with a 5.73 ERA in six starts at Petco Field.

(6/3/13) Padres starter Edinson Volquez helped his cause with a three-run home run, but was unable to factor in the decision Sunday night against the Blue Jays.
Volquez allowed four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven in five innings pitched. He has allowed four runs or more in three of his last four starts.
Volquez is scheduled to make his next start Friday at Colorado. He is 2-2 with a 4.98 ERA in six starts away from home.

(5/29/13) Padres manager Bud Black revealed Wednesday that starting pitcher Edinson Volquez has been battling blister issues over his last few starts, MLB.com reports. Volquez seems to be over the problems, showing good command of his curveball in Tuesday's win over the Mariners.

| If you assumed Edinson Volquez, as an extreme groundball pitcher with a high strikeout rate, would be immune to the PETCO Park effect in his first season with the Padres last year, you were quickly proven wrong. Volquez had a 2.95 ERA at his expansive home compared to a 5.60 mark everywhere else. A disproportionate home run rate was the main culprit. Home runs are especially bad for Volquez because he allows so many baserunners, having led the majors with 105 free passes last year, so when he's unable to avoid them, his ERA skyrockets. Guess he needs that big ballpark after all, huh? Unfortunately, that big ballpark is getting just a bit smaller with the Padres' decision to move in the fences this offseason. If Volquez's combined home run rate rises back up to 1.0 per nine innings, he could be in some trouble. The safe bet in Fantasy is to target him as a strikeout specialist in the late rounds and hope he exceeds your expectations in other areas. Considering he hasn't produced an ERA below 4.00 since 2008, safe to say you don't have to worry about missing out an ace if you pass him up. (Updated 12/4/12) |
