| Edinson Volquez knocked around by Nats |
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (5/17/13) Padres starting pitcher Edinson Volquez endured a rough outing as he suffered his fourth loss of the season Thursday night against the Nationals.
Volquez, who made his ninth start of the season, pitched three scoreless innings before surrendering a two-run home run to Adam LaRoche in the fourth. He allowed three more in the fifth, including a two-run single to Ryan Zimmerman. The right-hander was charged with five runs on five hits in five innings of work. He struck out seven and walked four in a 6-2 defeat.
Volquez has walked four batters in each of his last two starts and has surrendered four homers combined through his last four starts. He is scheduled to make his next start Tuesday at home against St. Louis. He went 1-1 with a 3.97 ERA in two starts last season against the Cardinals.

| Edinson Volquez doesn't factor into decision |
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (5/10/13) Padres starting pitcher Edinson Volquez turned in a decent outing but failed to factor into the decision Friday night at Tampa Bay.
Volquez, who made his eighth start of the season, allowed a run-scoring single to Evan Longoria and surrendered another run on a wild pitch in the third for his only damage of the night. He was charged with two runs on three hits in six innings of work in a 6-3 defeat. He walked four and struck out three in 100 pitches, 56 strikes.
Volquez has allowed two runs or fewer in four of his last five starts. He has watched his ERA drop from 11.68 to 5.15 over that span. The 29-year-old is scheduled to start Thursday at home against the Nationals. He allowed one run and struck out seven in seven innings of work in his previous meeting against Washington last season. He is also 2-1 with a 3.71 ERA in three starts at Petco Park this season.

| Edinson Volquez wins third straight |
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (5/5/13) Padres starting pitcher Edinson Volquez enjoyed another solid performance as he won his third consecutive decision during Sunday's series finale against the Diamondbacks.
Volquez (3-3), who made his seventh start of the season, served up a solo home run to Didi Gregorius for his only damage of the afternoon. The right-hander was charged with one run on four hits in 6 1/3 innings of work in a 5-1 victory. He also struck three and walked three in 94 pitches, 55 strikes.

| Edinson Volquez's shrinking strikeout rate |
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com (4/30/13) At least in the past, you could live with Edinson Volquez's mediocrity at the end of your rotation, thanks to solid strikeout numbers. But through his first six turns in the Padres' rotation, even that part of his game has regressed.
Entering the season, Volquez averaged 8.6 strikeouts per nine innings for his career. After Tuesday's start, that number is down to 5.23 through 31 innings. According to PITCHf/x data, his average velocity is down more than a mile per hour on his fastball and sinker, which could help explain why he is struggling to miss bats. His swinging strike percentage is down to 7.1, his lowest since a brief call-up in 2006. Batters are also making contact on 70.5 percent of swings out of the zone and 87.9 percent in the zone, which are worse than his career norms.
If Volquez is not missing bats, it is hard to see what he offers Fantasy owners. Even in a pitcher's park, Volquez should be avoided in most mixed-league Fantasy formats.

| Edinson Volquez earns second win |
by Adam Moore | CBSSports.com (4/30/13) Padres starting pitcher Edinson Volquez earned his second-straight win Tuesday against the Cubs. Volquez allowed four runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings in the 13-7 win, including a two-run home run by Luis Valbuena.
Starlin Castro added a two-run shot in the fifth, and Volquez was pulled an inning later after the loading the bases.
The right-hander threw 95 pitches, 65 for strikes, and finished with three walks and three strikeouts. He is 2-3 with a 6.39 ERA.
Volquez faces the Diamondbacks at home Sunday.

| If you assumed Edinson Volquez, as an extreme groundball pitcher with a high strikeout rate, would be immune to the PETCO Park effect in his first season with the Padres last year, you were quickly proven wrong. Volquez had a 2.95 ERA at his expansive home compared to a 5.60 mark everywhere else. A disproportionate home run rate was the main culprit. Home runs are especially bad for Volquez because he allows so many baserunners, having led the majors with 105 free passes last year, so when he's unable to avoid them, his ERA skyrockets. Guess he needs that big ballpark after all, huh? Unfortunately, that big ballpark is getting just a bit smaller with the Padres' decision to move in the fences this offseason. If Volquez's combined home run rate rises back up to 1.0 per nine innings, he could be in some trouble. The safe bet in Fantasy is to target him as a strikeout specialist in the late rounds and hope he exceeds your expectations in other areas. Considering he hasn't produced an ERA below 4.00 since 2008, safe to say you don't have to worry about missing out an ace if you pass him up. (Updated 12/4/12) |
