Preseason Outlook

It took a couple years longer than expected and included an early-season tease that turned some owners off for good, but Zimmerman finally emerged as a Fantasy stud, hitting .292 with 33 home runs and 110 runs scored -- all career highs. The breakout seemed a sure bet when he opened the season with a 30-game hitting streak, but then he hit .251 in June and July, causing some people to wonder if he might regress to his usual .260-.280 batting average and 20-25 home runs. Not so, as another hot streak later proved. In fairness, he did most of his damage in two months, hitting .346 in May and August and .262 the rest of the way, so he'll need to improve his consistency. But at age 25, he proved once and for all he has the talent to rank among the elite third basemen in the game. You won't have to draft him quite as early as Alex Rodriguez or Evan Longoria, but if you can walk away with him as late as the fourth round, consider yourself lucky. (Updated 12/18/09)
