Mets reassign pitcher Scott Rice to minors

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(3/28/15) The Mets have reassigned relief pitcher Scott Rice to their minor league camp, according to NJ.com.

Rice posted a 9.64 ERA in seven spring training appearances. He made 32 appearances in 2014 with a 5.93 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings pitched.

Mets taking additional look at LHPs Duane Below, Chase Huchingson

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/25/15) Left-handers Duane Below and Chase Huchingson were brought over from minor-league camp Wednesday for a Grapefruit League game, according to ESPN.

Per the report, the Mets are "dissatisfied" with the three southpaws on the roster (Scott Rice, Rule 5 pick Sean Gilmartin and Dario Alvarez), and are interested in taking an additional look at more lefty relievers.

"It's not a bad sign," Huchingson said. "That's for sure."

Mets scouting O's LHP Brian Matusz as replacement for Josh Edgin

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/16/15) With reliever Josh Edgin expected to miss the 2014 season due to Tommy John surgery, the Mets have been scouting Orioles reliever Brian Matusz, eyeing the left-hander as a potential replacement for New York's bullpen, according to the New York Post. Scott Rice , Dario Alvarez, Jack Leathersich and Rule 5 pick Sean Gilmartin are considered the internal options to take Edgin's spot, if the Mets don't make a trade.

Mets disappointed by lefty relief options

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/12/15) Mets left-handed pitchers Dario Alvarez, Sean Gilmartin, Jack Leathersich and Scott Rice have combined for a 15.43 spring ERA, leaving general manager Sandy Alderson and manager Terry Collins dissatisfied with the team's lefty candidates for the bullpen, ESPNNewYork.com reports.

"I’m not happy where we are with our left-handed situation," Alderson said Thursday.

The leading candidate to serve as the team's left-handed relief option at the beginning of spring was Josh Edgin, but the southpaw is now considering Tommy John surgery to fix an overstretched ligament in his elbow.

"Yeah, I’m disappointed," Collins said. "Here’s a chance. You come to the major league spring training and all you want is a chance. Now, with our guy down, if I’m left-handed I’m looking in the mirror and deciding what do I need to do to get that job, because it’s out there."

Alvarez surrendered four earned runs on one hit and three walks without recording an out in Thursday's 11-9 win over the Nationals.

Mets' Scott Rice: 'No problem' competing for bullpen spot

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/8/15) Mets pitcher Scott Rice is competing for the last spot in the team's bullpen this spring and said Sunday he has "no problem" with the situation, NJ.com reports.

"I have no problem competing," he said. "I've been competing my whole life. This is something I've had to deal with every year. Last year was the first year I came in where I was kind of penciled into a role. This is me. This is me coming out and competing every day. I'm not looking at competing against other people. I'm just looking to compete against myself."

Rice underwent elbow surgery in July and was let go by the team after the season, though the Mets brought him back in December on a minor-league deal. He posted a 5.93 ERA and 13:12 K:BB ratio in 13 2/3 innings last season.
