Preseason Outlook

LaRoche set career highs across the board last year. Unfortunately, that meant no more than a .258 batting average, 12 home runs and a .731 OPS for the former Dodger prospect, who at age 26 is running out of time to establish himself as an everyday big-leaguer. Fortunately, time is one luxury the perpetually rebuilding Pirates can afford him. He'll enter 2010 with every opportunity to have and keep the starting job at third base, and if the way he closed 2009 is any indication, he does have room for improvement. He hit .321 with five home runs in September -- a small sample size, but an encouraging one for a player who hasn't lived up to his pedigree. It's enough to make him a sleeper again in NL-only or even deeper mixed leagues, though based on his performance so far, another small step forward seems more likely than a sudden emergence.
