| Jeff Karstens approaching rehab assignment |
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com (5/1/13) Pirates starter Jeff Karstens will throw a simulated game Friday and is nearing a rehab assignment, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Karstens will likely head to either Double-A or Triple-A if the simulated game goes without issue. He's most likely about a month away from returning to the majors.

| Jeff Karstens dealt with a couple of injuries last season but continued to make progress as a starter for the Pirates. A shoulder issue sidelined him early on before a hip injury ended his season, but the right-hander ended up going 5-4 with a 3.97 ERA in 19 appearances (15 starts). He posted a 3.89 ERA as a starter and had an efficient 59-to-15 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 83 1/3 innings pitched in those outings. Karstens has made 20-plus starts just once in his career due to injuries and inconsistencies but he is expected to compete for a spot in the rotation during the spring so keep an eye on how he does. The 30-year-old will be worth a look in NL-only formats as a starter but should be ignored in most Fantasy leagues on Draft Day. (Updated 12/4/12) |
