(11/6/13) In addition to A.J. Burnett, who was not extended a qualifying offer, the Pirates have had several players declare free agency, including relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth, shortstop Clint Barmes, catcher John Buck, outfielder Marlon Byrd, starting pitcher Jeff Karstens and first baseman Justin Morneau.
Burnett is expected to re-sign with the Pirates if he doesn't retire. The Pirates have also expressed interest in bringing back Byrd, Morneau and Barmes.

(8/17/13) Pirates pitcher Jeff Karstens was able to play catch for the first time Friday, 10 weeks removed from shoulder surgery. He was able to throw off flat ground yet again Saturday, and is expected to begin a throwing program Monday, according to MLB.com.

(7/23/13) Pirates pitcher Jeff Karstens posted on Twitter over the weekend he will start throwing soon and is "feeling better than ever" six weeks after having shoulder surgery. Karstens has not pitched in 2013 after going 5-4 with a 3.97 ERA in 19 outings (15 starts) last season.

(6/15/13) Pirates pitcher Jeff Karstens, on the 60-day disabled list, told MLB.com he will have the stitches from his shoulder removed Sunday, nine days after his arthroscopic surgery to clean up the rotator cuff and labrum. The Pirates have not set a timetable for his return.

(5/27/13) The Pirates moved pitcher Jeff Karstens to the 60-day disabled list Monday, MLB.com reports. The move opens roster space for several additions to the roster.
Karstens is back in Pittsburgh for further medical evaluation after having to stop throwing Friday due to pain in his right shoulder. He was originally on the DL due to inflammation in the shoulder.
