Preseason Outlook

Lester has developed into one of the aces of Fantasy, jumping his strikeouts to 225 last year even though his innings total dropped, wins total fell to 15 and his ERA rose. After a poor start in April and May, though, Lester was a top 10 Fantasy pitcher there on out. He went 7-2 with a 2.82 ERA and .224 batting-average against after the break, proving he can be as good as anyone for an extended period of time. Coincidentally, Lester was also better in the second half of 2008 -- something to keep in mind if he gets off to another slow start this season. We rank him just outside of the top 10 starting pitchers to target on Draft Day, but the fact that he fronts the rotation of one of the top contenders in baseball will likely see him go a bit earlier than that in many drafts this spring. If he can pitch a little deeper into games, he could approach 225 innings, 250 strikeouts and be an AL Cy Young candidate. (Updated 1/20/10)
