Preseason Outlook

Marmol never really took charge as the Cubs' stopper last season, mostly because of a grotesque walk rate of nearly one per inning. That won't cut it as he heads to spring training as the closer for the first time, but it was somewhat out of character for him -- at least to that extent. Marmol is a threat to strike out 100 batters as a reliever and save close to 30 games, numbers that make him a top 20 closer to target on Draft Day. In addition to the talent and expected improvement as he grows into the last-inning role, the Cubs should be improved all around on the field and at the plate. That should mean more runs, more victories and more save chances. Heck, if Marmol performs up to his capability, he could prove to be the breakthrough reliever of the year in Fantasy. The fact he is available after as many 20 relievers makes him a nice sleeper. (Updated 1/20/10)
