Preseason Outlook

After a few seasons of steady progress into Fantasy Baseball's top 25 starters, Shields took a step back last season -- along with most of the 2008 AL champion Rays. For the first time in his career, he allowed more than a hit per inning and his walk rate climbed to boot. Perhaps this is more of what we should expect from a right-hander who never had the hype of a David Price, a lightning fastball of a Matt Garza or the wicked bat-slicing slider of a Scott Kazmir. Unlike that trio, though, Shields is durable and reliable. He also represents a pretty decent bargain after the top 30 Fantasy starting pitchers are off the board on Draft Day. (Updated 1/20/10)
