| Carlos Villanueva relegated to bullpen |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/18/13) The Cubs will move Carlos Villanueva back to the bullpen when Matt Garza returns to start Tuesday at Pittsburgh, the Daily Herald reports Saturday.
Villanueva did a decent job as a starter, going 1-3 with a 3.93 ERA over eight outings with 36 strikeouts over 52 2/3 innings.

| Carlos Villanueva hit hard by Rockies |
by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (5/15/13) Cubs pitcher Carlos Villanueva took his third loss on Tuesday night against the Rockies. He allowed seven runs on 12 hits over five innings of work in a 9-4 defeat.
The right-hander gave up five runs over his first three frames before Colorado pushed across two more runs in the fifth.
Villanueva (1-3) also struck out one with no walks. His ERA rose to 3.93.

| Carlos Villanueva, Scott Feldman at risk of demotion |
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com (5/11/13) With Matt Garza pitching at Triple-A Iowa and seemingly nearing a return from the disabled list, the Cubs have decisions to make in the rotation. According to the Chicago Tribune, Edwin Jackson, Travis Wood and Jeff Samardzija are not at risk of being sent to the bullpen upon Garza's return.
That leaves Scott Feldman and Carlos Villanueva as the two candidates for demotion when Garza re-joins the rotation. Both pitchers have been among the team's best, with Villanueva sporting a 3.02 ERA and Feldman down at 2.70.
At this point, it is not clear how many more minor-league rehab starts Garza is expected to throw.
"Like I said, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it," Cubs manager Dale Sveum told the Tribune. "It's a nice problem to have, but it's getting closer to that date and it's not a cut-and-dried situation."

| Carlos Villanueva quality again for Cubs |
by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (5/8/13) Cubs pitcher Carlos Villanueva turned in his fifth quality start on Wednesday afternoon against the Cardinals. He allowed three runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings of work.
Villanueva gave up a run in the first for the only damage over his first three frames. St. Louis would push across a run in the fourth and fifth before the right-hander cruised. He was done after throwing 101 pitches, 56 for strikes, and left in line for the win but the bullpen was unable to hold the lead.
The 29-year-old also walked three and struck out two in the no-decision.
His next start is scheduled for Tuesday against the Rockies.

| Carlos Villanueva stumbles again |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (5/3/13) Cubs pitcher Carlos Villanueva (1-2) allowed four runs for the second game in a row en route to his second straight loss during Chicago's 6-5 defeat to Cincinnati Friday. He lasted a season-low 5 2/3 innings as he permitted seven hits, including four doubles, as his ERA swelled to 2.85 after six starts.
Coming off an eight-strikeout performance in his previous start, Villanueva opened the game with a pair of strikeouts before surrendering a run-scoring double. He also yielded a run in the second inning and was tagged for two more runs in the sixth. The right-hander finished with four strikeouts and two walks.
Villanueva will attempt to halt his losing streak during his next projected start Wednesday against St. Louis. He is sporting a 1-1 record and 2.70 ERA in three outings at home this season.

| After making 13 starts in 2011, Carols Villanueva was needed in the rotation again for the Blue Jays in 2012 and enjoyed a productive campaign. He made a career-high 16 starts and went 5-7 with a 4.50 ERA in those outings. He also struck out 86 in 92 innings pitched as a starter and posted a personal-best 122 strikeouts in 125 1/3 innings overall. With the Blue Jays addressing their rotation needs via trade during the offseason, Villanueva signed a two-year deal with the Cubs and will compete for a starting role. Chicago only has a couple of openings in the rotation locked up so the right-hander is expected to compete with the likes of Scott Feldman and Scott Baker for the final two spots. Keep an eye on how he does as the 29-year-old could put up some decent numbers pitching in the National League again (he played with the Brewers previously). If he breaks camp as a starter, Villanueva would be worth a look in NL-only formats and some deeper mixed leagues on Draft Day. (Updated 1/2/13) |
