Preseason Outlook

Ryan opened last season as the lesser half of a platoon with Skip Schumaker at second base, but he took over as the full-time shortstop after the Khalil Greene experiment didn't pan out. The Cardinals have toyed with him as an everyday player for several years now but prefer to use him as a utility man, which is understandable considering his limited upside. He makes consistent contact but lacks home-run power and would max out at 20 stolen bases or so if given the opportunity. Basically, he's Ryan Theriot, only without the unabashed confidence of his manager. The Cardinals will no doubt give him a look among several options at shortstop this spring, but even if he wins the starting job, he won't have a firm hold on it. Avoid him in mixed leagues unless you just get desperate for steals. (Updated 1/5/10)
