Preseason Outlook

In a season of disappointment and unfulfilled expectations, the Royals did have one bright spot in Butler, who some Fantasy owners had prematurely dismissed after he didn't set the world on fire when the organization rushed him to the big leagues as a 21-year-old in 2007. Sure, it took a year or two, as it so often does, but Butler broke through last year, finally making good on the power potential that convinced the Royals to select him in the first round of the 2004 draft. He hit .314 with 13 homers and a .925 OPS after the All-Star break and .363 with six home runs and a 1.116 OPS in September. And considering he finished second in the majors with 51 doubles, he has more power yet to come. He's only 23, remember, meaning he's still a few years from his physical prime. Already established as a contact hitter, he's now emerging as the kind of all-around slugger that could make him a Fantasy stud. Consider him a mid-round sleeper who won't do you wrong even if he doesn't take that next step forward. (Updated 12/9/09)
