Preseason Outlook

Last year was supposed to be Iannetta's big breakout. He had taken a big step forward in 2008, hitting 18 homers and posting the second-highest OPS of any catcher in baseball. He had the confidence of the Rockies coaching staff and the starting job over Yorvit Torrealba -- something he didn't have going into 2008. He got to play in the World Baseball Classic, for crying out loud, showing he already had a foot in the door to greatness. But he let that door close on him. In fairness, he still walked plenty and hit 16 homers in 289 at-bats, giving him an OPS (.804) that ranked seventh among catchers with 200 at-bats, but that .228 batting average robbed him of whatever good graces he had garnered a year earlier and gave his starting job right back to Torrealba. Now, he has an uphill battle to climb back to prosperity. His potential is obvious, but his playing time isn't, making him no more than a late-round pick in Fantasy. If he doesn't finally break through at age 27, or if he doesn't get the opportunity, you'll want to replace him. (Updated 1/6/10)
