Preseason Outlook

Garrett Atkins' self-destruction did more to harm the Rockies than help them, but it did free them of one dilemma: It gave them an opportunity to play Stewart. They longed for one, even getting cute and allowing him to play 21 games at second base, granting him eligibility there for this season. Unfortunately, he didn't capitalize, hitting only .228 and never having the kind of hot streak that made you think he might have turned the corner. The longtime prospect and former first-round pick might have the ability to hit as high as .290 once he gets comfortable with major-league pitching, but you can only count on him for power numbers right now. Still, a potential 30 homers from a second or third baseman is no small contribution in Fantasy, and when you factor in the expected improvement from a soon-to-be 25-year-old, you don't have much to lose. He's as good of a sleeper as you'll find in the middle rounds. (Updated 12/22/09)
