(6/14/13) Cubs infielder Ian Stewart's suspension for violation of the loyalty clause in his contract was 10 days, a source told The Chicago Tribune Friday. Stewart has appealed his suspension.
At this point, the Cubs have no intention of releasing Stewart and paying the remainder of his $2 million contract, though they may try to negotiate an out in which the 28-year-old would be granted his free agency without getting the salary. Stewart is hitting .164 with four homers for Triple-A Iowa after hitting .201 in the majors this season.

(6/11/13) As expected, Cubs infielder Ian Stewart was officially suspended indefinitely without pay for violating the loyalty clause based on his actions on Twitter, president of baseball operations Theo Epstein told reporters Tuesday.
Stewart went on a Twitter rant Monday to vent his frustrations with the club. The Cubs demoted the 28-year-old after he was reinstated from the disabled list with a strained left quad. Stewart is hitting .164 with four homers for Triple-A Iowa after hitting .201 in the majors this season.

(6/11/13) After a Monday night Twitter rant that accused Cubs manager Dale Sveum of not liking him and keeping him down in the minors, third baseman Ian Stewart is likely to face a fine or suspension from the team.
Stewart took to Twitter to vent over being stuck in the minors after completing an injury rehab, while the team plays Luis Valbuena and Cody Ransom at third. Cubs GM Jed Hoyer told the Chicago Tribune on Tuesday that, "what he did was really unprofessional and there are going to be consequences. Beyond that, I’m not going to comment." The Tribune noted that the Cubs had suspended Milton Bradley in 2009 for negative comments made to a newspaper.
Stewart, playing for Iowa, has a .164 batting average with four home runs.

(6/11/13) Cubs infielder Ian Stewart tweeted that he would "probably never" reach the majors with the club.
Stewart was demoted by the team and was not receiving much playing time in Triple-A. Stewart is hitting .164/.279/.345 in the minors after hitting .201/.292/.335 in the majors this year.

(6/8/13) Cubs third baseman Ian Stewart homered three times in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader for Triple-A Iowa. Stewart finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored and eight RBI, improving his batting average to .170 in 36 games in the minors.

| Ian Stewart was traded from the Rockies to the Cubs before the 2012 campaign and earned the opening day nod at third base for Chicago. He was not able to get much going at the plate, however, as he batted just .201 with five home runs and 17 RBI before wrist surgery ended his season in mid-June. The Cubs re-signed Stewart to a one-year deal in the offseason and he is expected to complete for the starting job again. He will have to beat out Luis Valbuena and youngster Josh Vitters but at age 27, the potential is still there to have the breakout campaign owners have been waiting for. Stewart has the potential to hit 20-plus homers and drive in runs but based on his .224 average over the last three seasons, plan on leaving him for the deepest of NL-only formats on Draft Day.
