Fantasy Analysis
Before getting hurt, Sanchez didn't exactly provide the lift to the rotation the team was looking for when they traded for him in the offseason. He still doesn't have great control, walking 22 batters in 25 1/3 innings. We know Sanchez has strikeout potential, but he remains a low-end Fantasy option until he pitches with consistency. 04/29/2012 22:30 3 to Watch: The When will Albert homer edition
The calendar flips from April to May on Tuesday, and Albert Pujols remains homerless. Pujols has never had a homerless month in his career, and never hit fewer than five in his 11 Aprils with the Cardinals. Prince Fielder, who has three April homers in his first year with a new team, says homers aren't everything, in this edition of 3 to Watch.
It didn't take long for reality to set in for Jonathan Sanchez. The erratic left-hander genuinely seemed to have turned the corner in 2010 when he won 13 games with a 3.07 ERA and 205 strikeouts. But he still led the league in walks. The control problems that made him little more than a Fantasy tease in previous years hadn't gone away. He just managed to hide them behind an MLB-best 6.6 hits per nine innings. That ratio turned out to be one he couldn't maintain from one year to the next and with just a few more batters reaching base on hits, Sanchez was back to his same old tricks, rarely pitching out of the fifth inning and struggling to maintain an ERA below 4.50. He also battled biceps tendinitis, missing all of July with the injury, but his control disappeared on him long before then. The Giants ultimately decided they didn't want the headache anymore and shipped Sanchez off to Kansas City for Melky Cabrera in the offseason. The Royals figure to be a little more patient with Sanchez, but if he hasn't solved his control problems by age 29, perhaps he never will. Sanchez has obvious sleeper appeal in Fantasy, but coming off a down season and moving to a tougher league, he's no more than a late-round pick. (Updated 2/21/12)
