Preseason Outlook

Few people gave Sandoval's .345 batting average during a 145 at-bat trial late in 2008 the credit it deserved. Sure, he could hit, but that well that soon? He was only 22, didn't walk much and had only recently become a .300 hitter in the minors. Surely, everyday at-bats would expose him, bringing that small sample size down to size. Looks like Sandoval had the last laugh. No, he didn't quite hit .345, but he hit .330, which is arguably more impressive considering it came in a full season. His power also developed faster than anyone expected, his .943 OPS ranking second among third base-eligible players even though he had an on-base percentage only 57 points higher than his batting average. His low walk rate might limit his potential to score runs in an already weak Giants lineup, but as a contender for the batting title and a candidate to approach 30 homers in his second full season, he's clearly an early-round pick in Fantasy. Consider him as early as the fourth round, after the elite first and third basemen have gone off the board. (Updated 12/18/09)
