(3/6/13) CBSSports.com Senior Baseball Columnist Scott Miller reported Wednesday that free agent reliever Brian Wilson is possibly planning to wait until the season has already begun before he is ready to sign somewhere. Wilson, recovering from Tommy John surgery, has reportedly decided against auditioning for teams interested in his service until he is fully healthy, after an underwhelming tryout for the Mets in January. According to the report, Wilson is throwing bullpen sessions at about “80 to 85 percent”.

(1/27/13) ESPN reports Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said in a radio interview Sunday morning the team might take a second look at free agent reliever Brian Wilson. The Mets watched Wilson throw earlier in January and reports were the team came away unimpressed. Alderson said Sunday the last time the Mets saw Wilson throw he was still early in the process of coming back from Tommy John surgery last April.

(1/16/13) The Mets won't be giving free agent reliever Brian Wilson a major-league contract anytime soon, reports the New York Post. Wilson worked out for the Mets at UCLA Saturday, but he didn't impress, according to a baseball source. “Physically, he’s not ready,” the source said. “He’s got a ways to go.” Wilson, who is working his way back from Tommy John surgery last April, reportedly has no interest in a minor-league deal.

(1/13/13) USATODAY.com reports that free agent reliever Brian Wilson had a private workout for Mets general manager Sandy Alderson on Saturday, as the team is considering signing the Giants' former closer. However, according to the New York Post, Alderson is not yet sure if the Mets will make Wilson a contract offer. Wilson had Tommy John surgery last April and made only two appearances during the 2012 season, but he is expected to be ready for opening day.

| (1/9/13) The San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday that Brian Wilson has completed his long-toss program and will begin throwing off a mound soon. The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in April and made just two appearances last season. Wilson became a free agent in December after being non-tendered by the Giants.

| In 2009 and 2010, Brian Wilson put up back-to-back seasons in which he finished among the top five relievers in Fantasy, but since then, elbow woes have taken their toll. Wilson missed all but the first week of the 2012 season due to Tommy John surgery, and in the space of less than a year he had gone from being the Giants' closer to being non-tendered. Thrust upon the free agent market, Wilson could catch on with a team in need of a closer. As we saw with Joe Nathan a couple seasons ago, it can take a while for a closer to regain his footing after Tommy John surgery, so it could take Wilson some time to reestablish a high level of performance -- and that's assuming someone even gives him a chance to close this year. Like Nathan, Wilson could get that opportunity and eventually perform like a top reliever again, so at minimum, he is worth a flyer in the later rounds of standard mixed league drafts.
