Wilson close to throwing from mound: The San Jose Mercury News reports Giants RP Brian Wilson, who was limited to two appearances in the final six weeks of the 2011 season due to a strained right elbow, arrived at the team's spring training complex in Arizona last week to start his throwing program. Wilson is set to throw off a mound in a few days. "He's always been a workaholic, always in great shape," Giants trainer Dave Groeschner said in a phone interview. "We're working on his range of motion in his lower body, his flexibility, and of course strengthening his elbow and shoulder. It's great he's here. It's easy for us to keep an eye on him." Groeschner added that Wilson is throwing without problems, but he might throw a few more bullpen sessions this spring before getting into exhibition games. "We like what we see," Groeschner said. Elbow - Probable for start of spring training (Updated - 1/5/12)
Fantasy Analysis
Wilson dealt with some injury issues from the outset in 2011. He missed opening day because of back tightness and then was limited down the stretch because of his elbow issues. Wilson underwent Tommy John surgery back in 2003, but luckily this latest setback didn't require surgery. Wilson was limited to 57 outings and 55 innings in 2011. While his ERA rose to 3.11, Wilson still closed out 36 games and averaged 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings. It's definitely a little bit concerning that Wilson is coming off elbow problems, but as long as he is ready for the start of the season, then he worth the gamble in Fantasy as a No. 1 RP. Brian Wilson entered 2011 as one of Fantasy's top closers, having finished among the top eight in Fantasy points three years running. He fell out of the top 10 last season, as his value was dampened by a soaring walk rate, and oblique and elbow injuries curtailed his innings and effectiveness. In the middle portion of the season, when Wilson was at his healthiest, he was not much more wild than usual, but his velocity was down over the course of the entire season. In fact, Wilson generally relied on his fastball less, going to his slider more often, which may explain why he posted the lowest swinging-strike percentage of his career. Even while allowing more contact and more free passes, Wilson was still very effective, blowing only five of 41 save chances, but a 1.47 WHIP prevented him from performing like an elite. Owners should be cautious in targeting Wilson for 2012, not expecting a return to top-shelf status, but rather viewing him as a mid-to-low-end No. 1 RP option. (Updated 1/5/12)
