Upton goes yard in loss: Arizona OF Justin Upton hit a solo homer off Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo in the third inning of Friday's Game 5 of the NLDS. The Diamondbacks would end up losing the game, 3-2, in 10 innings, despite Upton's efforts. Upton went 1 for 4 in the contest with a walk and a strikeout. He hit just .200 in the series and had three RBI to his credit. (Updated 10/07/2011)

Fantasy Analysis
Upton posted his best season in the majors in 2011 as he finished with 31 home runs, 88 RBI, 105 runs scored and 21 stolen bases. All of those were career highs as he vaulted to the top of Fantasy outfielders. Even though his team didn't go the distance in the postseason, Upton was a big part of Arizona's success. Fantasy owners should view him as a top-10 OF option on Draft Day in 2012. (Updated 10/07/2011).

In the minor leagues, Justin Upton showed good strike zone recognition, but that skill was not in evidence over his first four seasons in the majors. While he has always walked frequently, Upton struck out plenty as well. In 2011, Upton finally improved his contact skills, dramatically reducing his strikeout rate by nine percentage points. With all of that extra contact came career highs in home runs (31) and doubles (39). Upton still has the capability to hit .300, and 2012 could be the first time that he crosses that batting average threshold while also surpassing 30 homers, 100 RBI and 20 steals. That promise makes Upton one of the top outfield targets in this spring's drafts, and he will likely be taken by the second round in most leagues. (Updated 1/9/12)
