Capps, Guardado struggle in debuts
(3/5/10) Two of the Nationals key offseason additions to their bullpen, righty Matt Capps and lefty Eddie Guardado, failed to impress Thursday. Capps, who signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal this December, gave up a home run to Jason Michaels in the fifth on the first pitch and allowed two runs in an inning of work. Guardado, who signed a non-guaranteed, minor league deal in December, allowed a homer to Yordany Ramirez and gave up three runs on four hits in an inning.
Nats give Guardado minor deal
(12/29/09) Veteran left-handed reliever Eddie Guardado and the Nationals have agreed to terms on a minor league deal. Nationals GM Mike Rizzo made the announcement Saturday. Terms were not disclosed. The 39-year-old Guardado is fourth among active pitchers with 908 appearances in a 17-year career with the Rangers, Twins, Mariners and Reds. The two-time All-Star has 187 career saves -- including an AL-leading 45 in 2002.
