His power steadily declining in recent years, Helton looked like he had finally reached his limit in 2008 when he shut down early to have back surgery. He had hit only .264, his batting average dropping nearly 60 points from the previous year, and coming off a procedure that sometimes seems to do more harm than good, his future looked grim. The Rockies didn't know what to expect from him, even suggesting in spring training he might play no more than four games per week. But did they ever sing a different tune after they saw him hit. Helton returned to his usual numbers in 2009, batting .325 with a .904 OPS as if the surgery had never happened. And best of all, he played 151 games, showing no signs of slowing down at age 36. His lack of home-run power will allow him to slide into the late rounds, but his high batting average and run production make him a bargain at that price, especially in leagues that reward walks.
