Saves king Hoffman retires: Trevor Hoffman, the major leagues' all-time saves leader, announced on Tuesday that he is retiring. "It's time to retire. It's time to move on," Hoffman told MLB.com. "This is more of a self-evaluation. I expect to pitch at a certain level and I had to be honest with myself that I wasn't certain I could maintain that anymore." His 601 regular-season saves put him 42 ahead of second-place Mariano Rivera for the all-time lead. Hoffman recorded his 600th career save last September for the Brewers against the Cardinals. He pitched in 1,035 regular-season games -- all in relief -- in an 18-year major league career. Hoffman played for the Padres for the vast majority of his career, though he also played two seasons for Milwaukee and half of a season with the Marlins. (Updated 01/11/2011)

Fantasy Analysis
Hoffman was an effective Fantasy closer as recently as 2009, though he struggled to a 2-7 record and 5.89 ERA last season, giving way to John Axford as the Brewers' new closer. Hoffman didn't figure to have much value in Fantasy for the 2011 season, but now he can be taken off all draft lists this spring. (Updated 01/11/2011).
