Preseason Outlook

In years past, you knew you could always count on Jones for elite numbers. You just couldn't count on him to stay on the field. Now, you can't count on him for either. After entering the year batting .342 over his last three, Jones slumped to .264 -- the second-lowest mark of his career. He started off fine, hitting .316 over the first two months, but he collapsed in the second half, hitting .236 with a slugging percentage (.389) rivaled by some utility infielders. You knew the decline would come eventually for the soon-to-be 38-year-old, but it came so suddenly, taking him from the batting title one year to the scrap heap the next. He still walked more than he struck out, which gives him some value even as a shell of his former self, but you can't bank on him providing you with starter-caliber numbers this season. As a player accustomed to playing through injury, perhaps one affected him more than he thought and all he needs to cure him is an offseason of rest. But more than likely, his decline is in full swing, making him a middle-round pick in Fantasy at best. (Updated 12/18/09)
