| Yanks put in call to Jones? |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (3/11/13) Speaking with reporters Monday, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he had plans to call the agent of retired third baseman Chipper Jones to gauge his interest in coming out of retirement. Cashman said Jones would be "perfect" for the Yankees, who are expected to open the season without third baseman Alex Rodriguez and first baseman Mark Teixeira due to injuries. "If Chipper Jones wants to come back, I'd love to have Chipper," Cashman said, per YES Network. The New York Post reports Jones' agent, BB Abbott, said he can't see a scenario where Jones comes out of retirement. "I will tell you what he (Chipper) has told me: He is retired and not planning to come back at all," Abbott said. "I don't think (New York) is something he would consider, but he would be flattered. We talked a lot about him in Pinstripes because of all the great players the Yankees have had, but it is probably too late now."
|
| After announcing last spring that the 2012 season would be his last, Chipper Jones made it one to remember, producing his highest batting average (.287) and OPS (.832) in four years. And apart from a leg contusion that sidelined him for a couple weeks at the end of May and beginning of June, he stayed relatively healthy, making him a relevant Fantasy option from start to finish. Unfortunately, if you've come to depend on his impressive ability to get on base in recent years, you'll have to look elsewhere now. Unless you get so desperate for a third baseman late in an NL-only draft that you're willing to gamble on a future Hall of Famer backing out on his word, you can ignore Jones on Draft Day.
