Preseason Outlook

In drafts last spring, Rodriguez came with as much uncertainty as any superstar can. He learned he'd need surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip, casting doubt over his immediate future and making him a second- or even third-round pick in some Fantasy leagues. He rebounded both from that procedure and an admission of steroid use to put up his usual studly numbers, his 30 homers and 100 RBI especially impressive considering his season didn't begin until May 8. He even shed his label as postseason choke artist, hitting six home runs to lead the Yankees to another World Series title, so he enters this season with as much confidence as he's ever had in a Yankee uniform. As he approaches his 34th birthday, you can't expect another 50-homer season from him, but 35-40 homers and perhaps as many as 20 steals is still plenty valuable at one of the weaker positions in Fantasy. A-Rod's age might cause him to slip to the middle of the first round, but he has the potential to outscore every other player in Fantasy. (Updated 12/18/09)
