| (2/17/11) Veteran outfielder Gary Sheffield officially retired on Wednesday. Sheffield completed a 22-year career with a .292 average, 509 homers (24th all-time) and 1,676 RBI (25th all-time). |
| Sheffield has offers on table |
| (2/23/10) Gary Sheffield told the New York Post that his body is ready for a 22nd major league season, he just isn't 100 percent sure yet that his mind is ready for the rigors. Sheffield told the Post that he's got offers on the table from teams and that it is just a matter of deciding which, if any, he wants to accept. “There are things on the table that I have to accept or not accept," the former Mets and Yankees slugger told The Post on Wednesday. “Right now I have not made up my mind." Apparently, the Mets are not one of the teams who have contacted him. “I have a few things to weigh," said Sheffield, who hit his 500th homer as a Met and has 509. “When you get ready to go through a spring training you have to make sure it’s worth it." |

| (2/12/10) Free agent slugger Gary Sheffield says his body is ready for another season, but his mind is undecided. “Right now I have not made up my mind," Sheffiled told the New York Post. “I have a few things to weigh. When you get ready to go through a spring training you have to make sure it’s worth it." While he is unsure whether or not he wants to play in 2010, his body is ready to do so. “I am in tip-top shape," he declared. “I am healthy and I have been working to get back to where I need to be. I am feeling great and I lost 15 pounds, down to 212." Sheffield batted .276 for the Mets in 2009 with 10 home runs and 43 RBI. |
| Sheffield won't play outfield again |
| (9/22/09) The Mets' Gary Sheffield probably won't play the outfield again this season because of his balky back, manager Jerry Manuel said Tuesday. Sheffield walked as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning that night against the Braves. He has been limited to three pinch-hitting appearances since Aug. 28. |
