Tavarez becomes free agent again
(7/30/09) Nationals reliever Julian Tavarez, who had been designated for assignment, refused a minor league assignment and elected to become a free agent.
Tavarez cut by the Nationals
(7/19/09) The Nationals designated right-hander Julian Tavarez for assignment on Sunday and placed pitcher Scott Olsen on the 15-day disabled list with a back injury. Washington also purchased the contracts of right-handers Logan Kensing and J.D. Martin from Triple-A Syracuse. Martin is scheduled to make his major league debut in a start Monday night against the New York Mets.
J. Tavarez struggling with control
(7/10/09) MLB.com reports that Julian Tavarez was given the day off on Thursday after throwing 43 pitches in two innings on Wednesday when he took his seventh loss. Manager Manny Acta is concerned that Tavarez has been walking too many people, walking 26 in 34 1/3 innings this season. "He has been very inconsistent for the last few outings," Acta said. "He is walking way too many guys. He is pitching behind in the count. He can't afford to do that. I don't think he is tired. He is pitching like everybody else. He is in tremendous shape and works very hard."
Tavarez hung with seventh loss
(7/8/09) Julian Tavarez (3-7) issued consecutive one-out walks to Carlos Gonzalez and pinch-hitter Seth Smith in the eighth Tuesday. Joe Beimel relieved and induced a comebacker from pinch-hitter Ryan Spilborghs but he missed shortstop Cristian Guzman going for the force at second, throwing past the bag to second baseman Willie Harris, who was on the edge of the infield. "I messed up and threw it to the wrong guy," Beimel said. "I did everything right up until that point. I got the ball I wanted, anticipated the grounder, got it -- and just blew it. There's no other way to describe it." Barmes followed with the tie-breaking sacrifice fly. "I was thankful in that situation to get a pitch I could put in the outfield," Barmes said. "That's really all I was trying to do. It worked out."
MacDougal leading Nats back end
(6/24/09) From The Sports Xchange: The Nationals have mostly solved the problem of the back end of their bullpen. They have not, however, fixed the rest of that beleaguered group. Since remaking its relief corps with several veteran arms, Washington has gotten solid pitching out of Mike MacDougal, Joe Beimel, Julian Tavarez and Ron Villone. But the three other members of the unit -- Joel Hanrahan, Kip Wells and Jesus Colome -- are struggling, and all own ERAs over 6.00. "Somebody has to step up out of those three guys, because I can't pitch the same four guys out of the 'pen every single day whether I'm trailing or I'm ahead," manager Manny Acta said. "They have to step up. Somebody out of those three has to step up and pick up some of those innings."
