| (3/9/09) C Javier Valentin signed a minor-league contract with the Nationals because they were the only team that extended an offer. A few more performances like Sunday against the Mets, and he might win the job of backup catcher. Valentin hit a two-run homer and a double in Washington's 8-3 victory over the Mets and is showing signs of erasing the memories of a frustrating 2008 season. "It feels good," said Valentin, who got a spring training invitation as part of his deal. "You're in the game and you feel what's going on. That's when you start getting comfortable." He finished 2-for-3. |

| (2/4/09) C Javier Valentin agreed to a minor-league deal with the Nationals on Tuesday. Valentin is a .251 hitter over 10 seasons with Minnesota, Tampa Bay and Cincinnati. He batted .256 with four homers and 18 RBI in 94 games last year with the Reds. |
