Preseason Outlook

Varitek's steadily declining batting average finally became too much to overlook for the Red Sox, who moved him to the bench when they acquired Victor Martinez at last year's trade deadline. The soon-to-be 38-year-old has apparently resigned to a backup role, exercising his option this offseason to remain with the Red Sox. He might play more often than most backup catchers since the team will sometimes bump Martinez to first base or designated hitter, but with less than 300 at-bats, you can't expect Varitek to make a significant Fantasy impact. He'll pop a few homers, but he might not even hit .240. He's more or less an AL-only option at this stage of his career. (Updated 1/6/10)
